I’m not gone yet… 61 days to go.
First, thank you for all the kind phone calls, notes, posts on LinkedIn, Facebook, etc., regarding the announcement of my upcoming retirement at the end of August. I truly appreciate the comments made, and I look forward to seeing many of you at the 2022 SMU Steel Summit Conference in Atlanta.
Between now and the end of August, I intend to pen several articles on factors affecting the steel industry and ultimately steel prices. We are living in dynamic times for the industry as steel mills make moves to modernize, decarbonize, and adjust their focus on what the industry will look like in the years to come.
I also intend on writing a few articles about the path I took that led me and Steel Market Update to this point.
Steel Market Update is well-positioned to continue to be a solid source of information, education, and a benchmark for the industry without me leading the charge. SMU will continue to evolve to properly cover an industry that is evolving as well. I encourage you to engage with Michael Cowden, Brett Linton, David Schollaert, Laura Miller, and the soon-to-be-named new team member who will be joining SMU in July. You will be able to meet them at this year’s SMU Steel Summit Conference on August 22-24. I will be at the conference as well as I take my last bow and past the baton to my successor.

Final thoughts
I’ve gotten some questions lately about whether the huge gap between domestic hot-rolled coil (HR) prices and those for cold-rolled (CR) and coated is sustainable. I remember being asked similar questions about the wide spread between HR and plate that developed in early 2022. I thought at the time that there was no way that spread could hold. Turned out, I was wrong. That was humbling. And so I’m not going to make any bold predictions this time.

We've used the word "unprecedented" a lot over the last four years to describe steel price volatility. Over the last two months – despite earlier predictions of a price surge - we've seen unprecedented stability.

I was in Las Vegas last week for ISRI’s annual convention. I like Vegas. I’ve had some fun there over the years. (I was married there nearly 20 years ago. We're still together.) And last week was no exception. So let’s start with the big news from Sin City. When the recycled materials industry meets for the big event next year, it will be under the banner of "ReMA" – not "ISRI".

This is not familiar territory for hot-rolled (HR) coil, at least not over the past few years. Final thoughts
I’m writing these Final thoughts from the 2024 ISRI Convention and Exposition in Las Vegas. I wasn’t the only one with the good idea to attend. Approximately 6,625 others did – a new record for the event. So, a big congratulations to ISRI.
