AISI Raw Steel Production for 2012 Up 2.7% Over 2011

The American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) reported their final raw steel production numbers for the month of December 2012. This estimation is different than the weekly raw steel production as it is based on 75 percent of the domestic mills reporting versus 50 percent for the weekly estimates.
Total raw steel production for the month of December was reported to be 7,904,173 net tons with 4,707,511 NT being produced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) and 3,196,662 NT produced by blast furnaces.
December 2012 production was reported by the AISI to have been 5.8 percent higher than November 2012 raw steel production.
Total raw steel production for 2012 through the month of December is now 97,769,374 NT which is 2.7 percent above that of 2011.
Capacity utilization rate for the month of December was reported by the AISI to be 71.7 percent and for the calendar year the utilization rate is reported to have been 75.2 percent. (Source: AISI)
