July Raw Steel Production at 2 Year High

The American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) reported their final raw steel production numbers for the month of July 2014. This estimation is different than the weekly raw steel production as it is based on 75 percent of the domestic mills reporting vs. 50 percent for the weekly estimates.
Total raw steel production for the month of July was reported to be 8,477,367 net tons with 5,242,794 tons being produced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) and 3,234,573 tons produced by blast furnaces. July raw steel production was reported by the AISI to have been 4.7 percent higher than the previous month. The last time production was this high was for the month of May 2012 when 8,722,909 tons were produced.
Total raw steel production in 2014 throughout July is now 56,550,310 tons which is 1.5 percent above that of 2013 through the same time period. The capacity utilization rate for the month of July was reported to be 79.6 percent and 77.6 percent for 2014 YTD. (Source: AISI)

Thin demand keeps plate prices hovering at lowest levels since February
