Extension Granted to Big River Steel in Lawsuit
Written by Sandy Williams
September 10, 2014
Big River Steel has been granted a 28-day extension to respond to the latest lawsuit brought by rival steel mill, Nucor Corporation. Nucor filed a suit in federal court last month to block construction of the 1.3 billion steel mill and to revoke the air permit that was granted to Big River. Nucor claims the future emissions from the new steel plant will adversely affect the health of Nucor employees.
Nucor opposed the courts decision on the grounds that the ongoing construction during an extension will lead to arguments by Big River that “the extent to which the project has been completed will affect the balance of harm involved in the issuance of an injunction.”
The official groundbreaking for Big River Steel is scheduled for September 22.
