Canadian Service Center Shipments and Inventories in August

Canadian shipments for all steel products in the month of August were 456,600 net tons, a decrease of 5.3 percent from the month before and a decrease of 4.6 percent from August 2013. Inventories at the end of the month stood at 1,499,500 tons, up 2.2 percent from last month and up 8.0 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for August was 24,306 tons (20 day month), down from 25,455 tons the month before (22 day month). Total August receipts were 70,800 tons lower than the July figure. According to the MSCI, total months on hand stood at 3.3 months, up from 3.0 months the previous month and up from 2.9 months in August 2013.
Flat Rolled
Canadian shipments of flat rolled products for the month of August were 225,000 tons, a decrease of 9.3 percent from the month before and a decrease of 9.0 percent from the same month one year ago. Inventories at the end of the month were 781,400 tons, up 4.3 percent from last month and up 3.2 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily receipt rate for August was 12,798 tons, down from 13,913 tons the month before. Total tonnage received was 257,100 tons, down from 305,600 tons the month before. At the end of August, flat rolled inventories stood at 3.5 months, up from 3.0 months in July and up from 3.1 months one year ago.
Plate
Canadian shipments for plate products in the month of August were 90,100 tons, an increase of 2.6 percent from the month before and an increase of 2.9 percent from August 2013. Inventories at the end of the month were 296,200 tons, an increase of 0.4 percent from last month and an increase of 16.2 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for August was 4,550 tons, down from 4,598 tons the month before. Plate inventories stood at 3.3 months, down from 3.4 months the previous month but up from 2.9 months in August 2013.
Pipe and Tube
Canadian shipments for pipe and tube products in the month of August were 51,400 tons, a decrease of 5.3 percent from the month before and a decrease of 0.7 percent from the same month last year. Inventories at the end of the month were 145,100 tons, down 1.9 percent from last month but up 13.2 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for August was 2,419 tons, down from 2,600 tons the month before. At the end of August, total months on hand for pipe and tube inventories stood at 2.8 months, up from 2.7 months in July and up from 2.5 months one year ago.
