Weekly Raw Steel Production Utilization Rate at 75.9%

For the week ending January 24, 2015, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated that the U.S. steel industry produced 1,825,000 net tons (NT) of raw steel, a 1.1 percent increase over the previous week and a 0.1 percent increase over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is 75.9 percent, up from 75.1 percent last week and up from 75.8 percent last year.

Estimated total raw steel produced for 2015 YTD is reported to be 6,326,000 tons, up 1.2 percent from the 6,254,000 tons produced during the same period in 2014. The average capacity utilization rate for 2015 YTD is estimated to be 76.7 percent, up from 75.8 percent for 2014 YTD.

Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: Northeast at 219,000 tons, up 1,000 tons. Great Lakes at 666,000 tons, up 16,000 tons. Midwest at 236,000 tons, unchanged. South at 614,000 tons, up 7,000 tons. West at 90,000 tons, down 5,000 tons. Total production was 1,825,000 tons, up 19,000 tons.
