More Layoffs at US Steel Gary Works
Written by Sandy Williams
March 15, 2015
US Steel has cut 83 more workers at Gary Works as it adjusts production to respond to market fluctuations.
The latest cuts are probationary employees at the Gary Works steel complex who have worked for the company six months or less. US Steel spokesperson Sarah Casella said the layoffs are permanent.
“The company routinely adjusts production at its operating facilities to reflect market fluctuations,” said US Steel in a statement. “These ongoing operational adjustments are a result of challenging market conditions that reflect the cyclical nature of the industry. Global influences in the market, including a high level of imports, unfairly traded products and reduced steel prices, continue to have an impact.”
Nearly 4000 US Steel job cuts have been announced so far in 2015, ranging across operations in Ohio, Texas, Minnesota, Illinois, Alabama, and Indiana.
