Weekly Raw Steel Production at 4 Month High

For the week ending August 1, 2015, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated the U.S. steel industry produced 1,760,000 net tons of raw steel, a 1.1 percent increase over the previous week but a 8.0 percent decrease over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is 73.6 percent, up from 72.8 percent last week but down from 79.6 percent this time last year.

The last time production was this high was for the week ending February 14, 2015 with 1,760,000 tons produced at a capacity utilization rate of 74.4 percent. The last time the capacity utilization rate was this high was for the week ending June 13, 2015 with 1,747,000 tons produced at a capacity utilization rate of 73.9 percent.

Estimated total raw steel produced for 2015 YTD is reported to be 52,247,000 tons, down 7.7 percent from the 56,619,000 tons produced during the same period in 2014. The average capacity utilization rate for 2015 YTD is estimated to be 72.5 percent, down from 77.6 percent for 2014 YTD.

Note that the total production capability figure for Q3 2015 is approximately 31.4 million tons versus 31.6 million tons for the same period last year and 30.7 million tons for the Q2 2015.

Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: Northeast at 226,000 tons, up 20,000 tons. Great Lakes at 646,000 tons, down 2,000 tons. Midwest at 201,000 tons, down 3,000 tons. South at 598,000 tons, up 2,000 tons. West at 89,000 tons, up 3,000 tons. Total production was 1,760,000 tons, up 20,000 tons.
