Written by John Packard
April 7, 2016
SSAB became the second domestic steel mill to announce a price increase, taking plate prices up by $60 per ton on all new spot orders. The mill also took their hot rolled coil pricing up by $60 per ton.
This is the first announcement by a plate mill since the 16th of March when SSAB took plate and HRC numbers up by $40 per ton.
Here is what the announcement, which was done in the form of a letter emailed to their customers, had to say:
Please be advised SSAB Americas is increasing transaction prices by a minimum of $60 per ton for all new non-contract orders, and for all existing non-contract orders acknowledged for shipment the week of May 1st and beyond.
The increase will apply for As-Rolled Mill Plate, Cut-To-Length Plate >72”, Hot Rolled Coils >72”, as well as Normalized and Quenched & Tempered Plate.
All extras will be applied as published.
We also reserve the right to re-quote any open offers that are not confirmed with an SSAB order acknowledgement. SSAB continues to monitor market conditions in order to better realize the value our products bring to our customers. All other Terms and Conditions of Sale remain unchanged.
The letter was signed by Christine Ovsenar, Director of Sales – Commercial Products for SSAB.

CRU: Demand weakness continues to weigh on global sheet markets
Demand has remained persistently weak across the globe for sheet steel, weighing on prices. US HR coil prices fell the furthest this week as high-volume, low-priced deals were transacted as mills looked to fill order books and competed with one another amid relative demand weakness.
