Steel Technologies LLC plans to invest $18 million in a new processing facility in Smyrna, Tennessee. The 83,000 square foot facility will create 50 new jobs and handle both steel and aluminum sheet.
“This new greenfield operation expands our exposed and unexposed automotive slitting and blanking capabilities,” Steel Technologies Vice President of Operations Randall Patterson said. “The facility will handle both steel and aluminum as we continue to deliver greater value and services to our strategic customers in the area.”
The facility will be the second in Tennessee for Steel Technologies and will include a slitting line and a 1,000 ton blanking press used to manufacture sheet metal for use in automotive production.
Construction is expected to begin in mid-summer and be completed by the end of first quarter 2017. The project has the support of the Rutherford County Industrial Board and includes a five-year tax abatement on facility equipment worth $300,000.
Steel Technologies, headquartered in Louisville, Ky., is owned as a 50-50 joint venture between Nucor Corporation and Mitsui & Co. (U.S.A.), Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., Ltd., a diversified global investment and service enterprise based in Tokyo, Japan. The company currently operates 24 facilities throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
