Steel Exports Reach 11 Month High in August

August steel exports totaled 812,010 net tons (736,644 metric tons), up 10.0 percent over July but down 1.7 percent from August 2015. This is the highest export level seen since August 2015, while last month we saw exports at a 7 month low (738,096 tons). Total August figures are above the thee month moving average (average of June, July, and August 2016 figures) and above the twelve month moving average (average of September 2015 through August 2016 data). Here is a breakdown of flat rolled and plate exports:
Cut plate exports increased 2.4 percent from July to August to 103,175 tons, down 2.1 percent compared to levels one year prior.
Exports of coiled plate were 43,558 tons in August, up 25.7 percent month over month and up 43.1 percent year over year.
Hot rolled steel exports increased 19.8 percent month over month to 66,721 tons and were up 6.9 percent from August 2015 levels.
Exports of cold rolled products were 55,836 tons in August, up 27.6 from July but down 4.7 over the same month last year.
Galvanized exports rose 21.8 percent month over month to 118,755 tons. Compared to one year ago, August levels were up 14.9 percent.
Exports of all other metallic coated products came in at 18,687 tons, a 2.9 percent increase from last month but a 10.2 percent decrease compared to one year ago.
