Comparison Price Indices: Minor Adjustments
Written by John Packard
February 12, 2017
We saw some “minor” slippage in flat rolled steel pricing this past week. When reviewing Platts (SteelBenchmarker did not report prices this past week) and our own steel indices we saw movement in hot rolled, cold rolled as stable, movement in galvanized and Galvalume and plate were stable.
Hot rolled prices were down $10 per ton to $610 per ton ($30.50/cwt) on the Steel Market Update index while Platts saw HRC down $5 per ton to $625 per ton ($31.25/cwt).
Cold rolled did not change as Platts remained at $830 per ton where they have been for a number of weeks and SMU remained at $820 per ton last week having adjusted CRC down $10 from the prior week at that time.
Galvanized was reported down $10 per ton with .060” G90 now averaging $894 per ton.
Galvalume .0142” AZ50, Grade 80 did not change this past week at $1126 per ton. The previous week (2 weeks ago) Galvalume dropped $15 per ton.
Platts reported plate at $690 per ton ($34.50/cwt) the same as the previous week.
We provide the extras being used for galvanized and Galvalume below.
SMU Note: Galvanized prices include $69 in extras for a .060″ G90 product. Galvalume prices include $291 in extras for a .0142” AZ50 Grade 80 product.
FOB points for each index:
SMU: Domestic Mill, East of the Rockies.
SteelBenchmarker: Domestic Mill, East of the Mississippi.
Platts: Northern Indiana Domestic Mill.
Note that SteelBenchmarker produces numbers twice per month. On the weeks they produce numbers we will include them in the average. The weeks where they do not produce numbers (NA = not available) we will not include their outdated numbers in the CPI average.
