SMU Price Ranges & Indices: Momentum Still on Mill Side

Steel prices continued to head into “lofty” levels with hot rolled, the strongest product, moving up another $10 per ton this week. Cold rolled bucked the trend as its average remained the same as one week ago. Galvanized and Galvalume prices were also seen as higher this week. Plate prices were mixed with our average dropping $10 per ton, although we do not see this as a change in the trend for the product. SMU Price Momentum Indicators are all pointing toward higher prices over the coming 30 days.
Here is how we see prices this week:
Hot Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $700-$750 per ton ($35.00/cwt-$37.50/cwt) with an average of $725 per ton ($36.25/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range remained the same compared to one week ago, while the upper end rose $20 per ton. Our overall average is up $10 compared to last week. Our price momentum on hot rolled steel is now pointing to Higher indicating prices are expected to increase over the next 30-60 days.
Hot Rolled Lead Times: 3-7 weeks
Cold Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $820-$880 per ton ($41.00/cwt-$44.00/cwt) with an average of $850 per ton ($42.50/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. Both the lower and upper ends of our range remained the same compared to last week. Our overall average is unchanged compared to one week ago. Our price momentum on cold rolled steel is now pointing to Higher indicating prices are expected to increase over the next 30-60 days.
Cold Rolled Lead Times: 5-10 weeks
Galvanized Coil: SMU base price range is $42.00/cwt-$45.50/cwt ($840-$910 per ton) with an average of $43.75/cwt ($875 per ton) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. Both the lower and upper ends of our range increased $40 per ton compared to one week ago. Our overall average is up $40 per ton compared to last week. Our price momentum on galvanized steel is now pointing to Higher indicating prices are expected to increase over the next 30-60 days.
Galvanized .060” G90 Benchmark: SMU price range is $926-$996 per net ton with an average of $961 per ton FOB mill, east of the Rockies.
Galvanized Lead Times: 5-10 weeks
Galvalume Coil: SMU base price range is $42.00/cwt-$45.50/cwt ($840-$910 per ton) with an average of $43.75/cwt ($875 per ton) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range increased $20 per ton compared to last week, while the upper end rose $30 per ton. Our overall average is up $25 per ton compared to one week ago. Our price momentum on Galvalume steel is now pointing to Higher indicating prices are expected to increase over the next 30-60 days.
Galvalume .0142” AZ50, Grade 80 Benchmark: SMU price range is $1,131-$1,201 per net ton with an average of $1,166 per ton FOB mill, east of the Rockies.
Galvalume Lead Times: 6-8 weeks
Plate: SMU price range is $760-$860 per ton ($38.00/cwt-$43.00/cwt) with an average of $810 per ton ($40.50/cwt) FOB delivered. The lower end of our range declined $20 per ton compared to one week ago, while the upper end remained the same. Our overall average is down $10 per ton compared to last week. Our price momentum on plate steel is now pointing to Higher indicating prices are expected to increase over the next 30-60 days.
Plate Lead Times: 4-9 weeks
