Registration Open for Memphis Steel 101 Workshop
Written by John Packard
March 19, 2018
Registration is now available on our website for the next Steel 101 workshop in Memphis, Tenn.
On June 5 & 6, 2018, Steel Market Update will host our Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals workshop. The workshop will be held at the Westin on Beale Street in downtown Memphis. From there we will travel by bus to the Nucor Hickman and Nucor-Yamato steel plants.
Our workshop is unique in that we conduct a half-day of training about the steel making and rolling process for both flat and long products. This workshop will be a good one for companies that buy both as we will tour a flat rolled mill (Hickman) and a beam mill (Nucor-Yamato). To make it even more interesting, we will also tour the Castrip mill located at Nucor-Yamato. The Castrip mill produces hot bands through a unique process, which can only be seen at Nucor-Yamato or the Nucor Crawfordsville facilities in the United States.
Information about our agenda, instructors, hotel and costs associated with this workshop can be found on our website: www.SteelMarketUpdate.com/events/steel101 or you are welcome to reach out to us at info@SteelMarketUpdate.com or by phone at 800-432-3475.
As with any Steel 101 workshop, attendees receive a 100+ page workbook and a three-month subscription to the Premium version of the SMU newsletter. Nucor and SMU will host a networking/cocktail/dinner party on Beale Street on the evening of June 5.
“The Steel 101 workshop is a must for anyone beginning their journey in the metals industry. Getting to work hand in hand with some of the industry’s most experienced professionals has helped launch me forward in my new career. This industry is complicated, and the workshop cleared up so many questions I had. Learning all this valuable information and then getting to see it in action on the mill tour was a priceless experience. I strongly encourage anyone who is new to the metals industry to sign up.” Victoria Letnich, Outside Sales, Olympic Steel

Final Thoughts
The difference: The spat with Turkey was a big deal for steel. This time, the 50% reciprocal tariff for Brazil – if it goes into effect as threatened on Aug.1 – hits everything from coffee and to pig iron. It seems almost custom-built to inflict as much pain as possible on Brazil.
