Active Gas & Oil Rig Counts in April

The U.S. rig count, an indicator of oil country tubular goods demand, rose this week, according to April 13 data from oilfield services company Baker Hughes. The number of active U.S. drill rigs rose by 5 to 1,008 rigs, with oil rigs up 7 to 815 rigs, gas rigs down 2 to 192 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 1 rig. Compared to this time last year, the 1,008 count is up 161 rigs, with oil rigs up 132, gas rigs up 30, and miscellaneous rigs down 1. The Canadian rig count continues to slide downwards. This past week, the count fell 9 to 102 rigs, with oil rigs down 7 to 41 rigs, gas rigs down 2 to 61 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 0. Compared to last year, the 102 count is down by 16 rigs, with oil rigs up 1, gas rigs down 17, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged.
