Active Gas & Oil Rig Counts Looking Positive

The U.S. rig count, an indicator of oil country tubular goods demand, increased this week, according to July 13 data from oilfield services company Baker Hughes. The number of active U.S. drill rigs rose by 2 to 1,054 rigs, with oil rigs unchanged at 863 rigs, gas rigs up 2 to 189 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 2 rigs. Compared to this time last year, the 1,054 count is up 102 rigs, with oil rigs up 98, gas rigs up 2 and miscellaneous rigs up 2. See the first graph below for a history of active U.S. rig counts.
The Canadian rig count rose by 15 to 197 rigs, with oil rigs up 13 to 139 rigs, gas rigs up 2 to 58 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 0. Compared to last year, the 197 count is up 6 rigs, with oil rigs up 33, gas rigs down 27, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged. See the second graph below for a history of active Canadian rig counts.
