Written by John Packard
August 8, 2018
The following report is normally provided to data providers and Premium level members of Steel Market Update:
Steel Market Update began collecting flat rolled and plate inventories information from our participating service centers beginning on Monday of this week. The following is our “Flash” report, which is derived from at least 50 percent of the respondents, and provides a snapshot of what we anticipate when we receive all of the data. The headline finding: inventories have remained essentially flat compared to May.
SMU “Flash” report is showing service center flat rolled steel inventories as being 0.2 months of supply lower at the end of July than what we reported for June. Our Flash analysis has the number of months of supply for flat rolled as trending toward 2.6 months of supply. We reported end of June inventories as being 2.8 months.
Steel Market Update has been working with our service center data providers and collecting information regarding the number of months of supply distributors have on their floor of flat rolled and plate steel products. Our “Flash” report is based on 73 percent of the data providers having already responded with their data.
Of those responding to date:
- Those reporting higher inventories = 27 percent
- Those reporting same levels as June = 16 percent
- Those reporting lower inventories = 57 percent
July “Flash” Plate Inventories Trending to Stable Month Compared to June
With 80 percent of the plate data providers having already responded with their information we are seeing plate steel inventories as the same as June at 2.1 months of supply.
Of those responding to date:
- Those reporting higher inventories = 38 percent
- Those reporting same levels as June = 50 percent
- Those reporting lower inventories = 12 percent
We should have our complete report done toward the end of this week.
