Steel Market Update’s next Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals workshop will be held in Starkville, Miss., on Jan. 29-30, 2019. We will be touring the Steel Dynamics Columbus steel mill. The SDI mill produces steel from scrap, pig iron and other iron units in their EAF (electric arc furnace). SMU would like to thank all the good people at Steel Dynamics for their hospitality.
Those attending this workshop will learn about the steel making process – from iron ore, limestone and coke in a blast furnace (integrated mill) to the “mini” mills, like Steel Dynamics, whose charge is mostly recycled scrap.
You will also learn about how various qualities of steel are made, what residuals are and how they affect the quality of the steels being rolled.
Our metallurgists will describe how both long and flat products are rolled to their final configuration, be it a coil, plate, beam or bar.
After learning about the steel making and rolling process, you will get the opportunity to witness one of the most dynamic scenes – the dropping of the scrap charge into the furnace, as well as the continuous caster and hot strip mill. Red hot molten steel becoming a hot rolled coil.
On the second day of the conference, we will discuss important market factors to watch and what tools exist within Steel Market Update (and now CRU) that will be valuable to your understanding of the market trends.
Included with the workshop is a 100+ page book spelling out what you learned and providing links to various websites and products to further your career.
This workshop is intended not only for those new to the steel industry, but also those who want a refresher course or would like to deepen their market knowledge.
Registration is $2,000 per person with $100 per person discounts provided to SMU member companies. We also provide an additional $100 per person discount to any company sending two or more attendees to this workshop. You can find more details about the workshop on our website: www.SteelMarketUpdate.com/Events/Steel101
