December Steel 101 Workshop Filling Up
Written by John Packard
September 24, 2018
Steel Market Update will conduct one of our popular Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals workshops in Toledo, Ohio, on Dec. 11-12. We are working with North Star BlueScope, which will provide attendees with a tour of their electric arc furnace, caster and hot strip mill (all of the fun stuff).
The workshop is currently 60 percent sold, which means we do have seats available. However, you may want to register your people as soon as possible. We anticipate this workshop will be sold out weeks prior to its scheduled start.
This workshop is meant to provide an overview of the steel industry as we discuss how steel is made and rolled from a flat rolled, plate and long products perspective. With Peter Wright being replaced in this workshop by Roger Walburn of NLMK USA, we expect to have a stronger focus on flat rolled and plate products than in past workshops.
The workshop discusses how qualities of steel are made, what residuals are and how they impact different kinds of steels, the differences between a “minimill” and an integrated mill, and we discuss the standards and testing of steel.
We end the program by discussing what impacts steel pricing, such as supply, demand and other factors (like a Section 232 tariff).
You can find more details about this workshop, its costs and how to register at www.SteelMarketUpdate.com/Events/Steel101
If you have any questions, please reach out to us at info@SteelMarketUpdate.com or by phone at 706-216-2140.

HR Futures: Market finds footing on supply-side mechanics
As Labor Day marks the transition into fall, the steel market enters September with a similar sense of change. Supply-side fundamentals are beginning to show signs of restraint: imports are limited, outages loom, and production is capped, setting the stage for a market that feels steady on the surface but still unsettled underneath.
