November Rotary Rig Counts Remain Positive

The U.S. active rotary rig count, an indicator of oil country tubular goods demand, declined slightly week over week, according to oilfield services company Baker Hughes. The number of active U.S. rigs fell by 1 to 1,067, with oil rigs down 1 to 874 rigs, gas rigs unchanged at 193 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 0 rigs. Compared to this time last year, the 1,067 count is up 169 rigs, with oil rigs up 145, gas rigs up 24, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged. The Canadian rig count declined by 2 to 198 rigs, with oil rigs down 3 to 121 rigs, gas rigs up 1 to 77 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 0. Compared to last year, the 198 count is up 6 rigs, with oil rigs up 21, gas rigs down 14, and miscellaneous rigs down 1. See the second graph below for a history of active Canadian rig counts.
