SMU Price Ranges & Indices: Seesaw

Written by Brett Linton

We captured some very low (market-share grabbing) hot rolled prices this week. We are seeing two domestic mills aggressively going after hot rolled orders. We saw spot HRC as low as $660 FOB one specific mill. However, we have decided not to include their offers in the market pricing yet. Our readers need to be aware that they exist. With short work weeks due to the holidays, we should not read too much into last week’s or this week’s numbers. Next week will be the first “normal” week for business. We saw two products drop this week: hot rolled and Galvalume. Plate, which has been the strongest product, rose modestly for the week.

Here is how we see prices this week:

Hot Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $690-$750 per ton ($34.50/cwt-$37.50/cwt) with an average of $720 per ton ($36.00/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range declined $10 per ton compared to one week ago, as did the upper end. Our overall average is down $10 per ton compared to last week. Our price momentum on hot rolled steel is Lower meaning we expect prices to decline over the next 30 to 60 days.

There are numbers being offered as low as $660 FOB Mill. However, those figures are not universal and are related to moves to take market share. If we take the lower numbers into consideration our average would drop to $705 per ton. However, I do not feel that is representative of what is being offered by most of the mills right now.

Hot Rolled Lead Times: 2-5 weeks

Cold Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $800-$850 per ton ($40.00/cwt-$42.50/cwt) with an average of $825 per ton ($41.25/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range rose $20 per ton compared to last week, while the upper end fell $20 per ton. Our overall average is unchanged compared to one week ago. Our price momentum on cold rolled steel is Lower meaning we expect prices to decline over the next 30 to 60 days.

Cold Rolled Lead Times: 4-7 weeks

Galvanized Coil: SMU base price range is $39.00/cwt-$43.00/cwt ($780-$860 per ton) with an average of $41.00/cwt ($820 per ton) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. Both the lower and upper ends of our range remained the same compared to one week ago. Our overall average is unchanged compared to last week. Our price momentum on galvanized steel is Lower meaning we expect prices to decline over the next 30 to 60 days.

Galvanized .060” G90 Benchmark: SMU price range is $858-$938 per net ton with an average of $898 per ton FOB mill, east of the Rockies.

Galvanized Lead Times: 5-9 weeks

Galvalume Coil: SMU base price range is $39.00/cwt-$43.00/cwt ($780-$860 per ton) with an average of $41.00/cwt ($830 per ton) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range declined $20 per ton compared to last week, while the upper end remained the same. Our overall average is down $10 per ton compared to one week ago. Our price momentum on Galvalume steel is Lower meaning we expect prices to decline over the next 30 to 60 days.

Galvalume .0142” AZ50, Grade 80 Benchmark: SMU price range is $1,071-$1,151 per net ton with an average of $1,111 per ton FOB mill, east of the Rockies.

Galvalume Lead Times: 6-7 weeks

Plate: SMU price range is $990-$1,030 per ton ($49.50/cwt-$51.50/cwt) with an average of $1,010 per ton ($50.50/cwt) FOB delivered to the customer’s facility. The lower end of our range rose $10 per ton compared to one week ago, while the upper end remained the same. Our overall average is up $5 per ton compared to last week. Our price momentum on plate steel is Neutral meaning we expect stable prices over the next 30 days. The domestic plate mills continue to be on controlled order entry as their order books are strong with limited spot plate tonnage available.

Plate Lead Times: 5-9+ weeks, allocation/controlled order entry
