CSI Raises Flat Rolled Price by $40 Per Ton

California Steel Industries (CSI) raised the price of its hot rolled, P&O, cold rolled and galvanized sheet products by $40 per ton ($2/cwt) today. CSI has opened its flat rolled order book for April shipments.
CSI’s change follows on a similar $40 increase it announced on Jan. 21, just one month ago. All pricing is subject to slab availability and mill capacity, the company said.
Nucor and ArcelorMittal also announced price changes today, which suggests that the mills have had some success in collecting last month’s increases and are hoping for more. The price of hot rolled steel has declined by about 25 percent since last summer and the mills have been struggling to reverse the trend. Buyers tell Steel Market Update that current mill offers for hot rolled are typically in the $680-$700 per ton range.

Final Thoughts
The difference: The spat with Turkey was a big deal for steel. This time, the 50% reciprocal tariff for Brazil – if it goes into effect as threatened on Aug.1 – hits everything from coffee and to pig iron. It seems almost custom-built to inflict as much pain as possible on Brazil.
