ArcelorMittal replaces EAF transformer, raising casting capacity in Mexico
Written by Laura Miller
ArcelorMittal Mexico has replaced the transformer on its No. II electric-arc furnace, increasing slab casting capacity by 18%.
“The arrival of the new TAMINI transformer, from Italy, marks a significant improvement in operational capacity,” the company said in a statement. “Electric Arc Furnace II’s capacity has increased from 126 to 175 MVA, allowing for an 18% increase in the number of heats per day and strengthening the production process.”
The new transformer replaces one that had been in operation since 1988, and at the end of its useful life.
ArcelorMittal said the “replacement represented a significant technical challenge, both because of the equipment’s size and the precision required for its installation.”
The company said the replacement took 14 days.
ArcelorMittal operates four EAFs and one blast furnace at its mill in Lazaro Cardenas in the state of Michoacan on Mexico’s southwest coast. The EAFs are used to produce flat-rolled products, while the BF is reserved for long products.
