ArcelorMittal execs consider second EAF at Calvert
Written by Ethan Bernard
ArcelorMittal executives said they are eyeing a potential second EAF at the company’s Calvert, Ala., operations.
The Luxembourg-based steelmaker produced the first heat from the initial EAF at Calvert back in June 2025, and that project continues to ramp up.
“In the US, we are advancing studies for a potential second EAF at Calvert, building on the successful execution of the first EAF,” Executive VP and CFO Genuino Christino said in a second-quarter earnings call on Thursday.
Daniel Fairclough, head of investor relations and VP of corporate finance, underlined the success of the first EAF, and also pointed to a possible second unit.
He said the first EAF continues to ramp up very well. “We expect full capacity to be achieved later in this second half of the year.”
Fairclough highlighted that the Calvert EAF “is the first of its kind capable of producing the most demanding exposed automotive grades.”
Regarding a possible second EAF, he called it “a very strong project.”
“It would further increase our domestic US melt-and-pour capacity, and it would make Calvert less dependent on imported sources of slab,” Fairclough said. “So it’s very consistent with that overall US policy objective of producing steel domestically and having those robust supply chains.”
As far as concrete plans, he stated the company is moving forward with the detailed engineering for the second EAF.
“We’re incorporating the lessons learned from the first EAF project to optimize this. And when we’ve got any updates, we will share those with you in due course,” Fairclough said.
ArcelorMittal Calvert produces 5.3 million metric tons (mt) of flat-rolled steel annually, according to its website.
North American ops Q2’26 earnings
The company’s North American operations had total sales of $3.67 billion in Q2’26, up 18% year over year. EBITDA increased 89% to $488 million in the same comparison.
Meanwhile, steel shipments totaled 2.83 million mt in the quarter, up 12% from Q2’25.
