January Heating and Cooling Equipment Shipments Up 6.6 Percent

Total heating and cooling equipment shipments in January rose 6.6 percent compared to one year ago, according to data recently released by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). Excluding the 5.1 percent slip last September, total monthly equipment shipments on a year-over-year basis have increased every month since November 2016.
Residential and commercial storage water heater shipments rose 12.3 percent year over year to a combined 857,925 units; 839,192 units were shipped for residential use and 18,733 units for commercial use.
Shipments of warm air furnaces totaled 235,589 units in January, down 11.4 percent compared to the same month last year. This is the largest year-over-year decrease since May 2015.
Central air conditioners and air-source heat pump shipments rose 7.5 percent over a year ago to 518,988 total units; 283,498 air conditioners and 235,490 heat pumps were shipped.
