Steel mills continue to press for higher prices and this week SMU found success on everything but hot rolled coil, which continues to lag behind the rest of the flat rolled market. We found that maintenance at Steel Dynamics and other mills over the next 30-45 days is weighing on some steel buyers.
Here is how we see prices this week:
Hot Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $540-$620 per ton ($27.00-$31.00/cwt) with an average of $580 per ton ($29.00/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. Both the lower and upper ends of our range remained unchanged compared to one week ago. Our overall average is unchanged compared to last week. Our price momentum on hot rolled steel is now Higher meaning we expect prices to increase over the next 30 days.
