SMU Virtual Steel Summit Conference Update

Written by John Packard

The 2020 SMU Steel Summit Conference will be a virtual conference this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is disappointing that we are not able to do a live conference, but we think we are going to provide a solid alternative that will feed your need to interact with multiple companies who buy and sell or participate in the flat rolled and plate steel markets.

What the virtual conference will not be is a bunch of thrown together webinars done by speakers who have very little to say, or you have seen many times before. SMU has accepted the challenge thrown at us by the pandemic to put a conference together with solid and engaging content. Content that challenges some of your assumptions. Content that provides challenges and opportunities.

We encourage companies to learn more about how we intend to present valuable information on a wide range of topics of imporance to the greater steel community. Yes, we will discuss and forecast steel prices, the economy and commodity prices. The conference will focus on the new capacity being built and we will have differing opinions presented regarding Steelmageddon or a possible steel shortage heading our way. For the first time, we will have a one-on-one discussion with David Burritt, President & CEO of U.S. Steel as well as Lourenco Goncalves, Chairman and CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs/AK Steel. Our program will include honoring young people in the industry with our SMU NexGen Leadership Award sponsored by the Steel Manufacturers Association. We will hear from steel buyers and analysts regarding what direction key industries are heading in 2021. This is only a fraction of what will be discussed at this year’s event.

As with every SMU event, networking will be a key component and we are working hard to ensure interaction between attendees. We have effectively just begun registering companies for this year’s event, and the response has been solid. We expect our conference to continue to be “The” steel event of the year. Here are some of the companies attending (those with a * mean more than one attendee): Mill Steel*, 3VC Consulting LLC, Red Bud Industries*, Beaver Steel Services, inc., Berg Pipe*, Bilstein Cold Rolled Steel, Bank of America*, Cleveland Steel Container, Heating & Cooling Products, Imperial Manufacturing Group, Crowe*, CME*, Klauer Manufacturing Company, Klein Steel, Leeco Steel LLC, Big River Steel, Pacesetter*, Lozier Corporation, Midwest Pipe & Steel, Mitsui Steel Inc., Kenwal, Morrison Products, New Process Steel*, North Shore Steel*, Heidtman Steel, Northview Advisors, Steel Research Associates, Ryerson*, Nucor, POSCO America, Priefert Manufacturing*, Delta Steel, Steel Manufacturers Association, Quality Edge, SSAB, Steel & Pipe Supply, BMO, Magic Coil Products*, Steel Technologies, Superior Steel Supply, LLC, Ternium USA, Inc.*, Ratner Steel Supply, Paragon Steel, Triad Metals, U.S. Geological Survey, Westman Steel Industries, Acero Prime, Alliance Steel, MidWest Materials, and more are being added daily.
