SMU Price Ranges & Indices: Big Jump in Flat Rolled

Flat rolled steel prices saw a big jump this week nearly equivalent to the $50 per ton increase announced by the mills last week. Steel Market Update’s latest check of the market puts the current benchmark price for hot rolled at $650 per ton. The mills also announced price increases on plate last week, with little response in the market so far. SMU’s Price Momentum Indicators remain pointing Higher.
Here is how we see prices this week:
Hot Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $640-$660 per net ton ($32.00-$33.00/cwt) with an average of $650 per ton ($32.50/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range increased $50 per ton compared to one week ago, while the upper end increased $40. Our overall average is up $45 per ton from last week. Our price momentum on hot rolled steel is Higher, meaning prices are expected to rise in the next 30 days.
Hot Rolled Lead Times: 4-6 weeks
Cold Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $800-$850 per net ton ($40.00-$42.50/cwt) with an average of $825 per ton ($41.25/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. Both the lower and upper ends of our range increased $50 per ton compared to last week. Our overall average is up $50 per ton from one week ago. Our price momentum on cold rolled steel is Higher, meaning prices are expected to rise in the next 30 days.
Cold Rolled Lead Times: 5-10 weeks
Galvanized Coil: SMU price range is $790-$850 per net ton ($39.50-$42.50/cwt) with an average of $820 per ton ($41.00/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range increased $30 per ton compared to one week ago, while the upper end increased $40. Our overall average is up $35 per ton from last week. Our price momentum on galvanized steel is Higher, meaning prices are expected to rise in the next 30 days.
Galvanized .060” G90 Benchmark: SMU price range is $859-$919 per ton with an average of $889 per ton FOB mill, east of the Rockies.
Galvanized Lead Times: 6-12 weeks
Galvalume Coil: SMU price range is $830-$850 per net ton ($41.50-$42.50/cwt) with an average of $840 per ton ($42.00/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range increased $40 per ton compared to last week, while the upper end increased $20. Our overall average is up $30 per ton from one week ago. Our price momentum on Galvalume steel is Higher, meaning prices are expected to rise in the next 30 days.
Galvalume .0142” AZ50, Grade 80 Benchmark: SMU price range is $1,121-$1,141 per ton with an average of $1,131 per ton FOB mill, east of the Rockies.
Galvalume Lead Times: 7-10 weeks
Plate: SMU price range is $610-$660 per net ton ($30.50-$33.00/cwt) with an average of $635 per ton ($31.75/cwt) FOB delivered to the customer’s facility. The lower end of our range decreased $10 per ton compared to one week ago, while the upper end increased $10. Our overall average is unchanged from last week. Our price momentum on plate steel is Higher, meaning prices are expected to rise in the next 30 days.
Plate Lead Times: 5-6 weeks
