Strike Impairs NLMK USA Production in Q3
Written by Sandy Williams
October 13, 2020
Sales at NLMK USA plunged 33 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of 2020 due to lower production resulting from the strike at NLMK Pennsylvania. Compared to the previous quarter, USA sales jumped 11 percent to 370,000 metric tons following the completion of repairs at NLMK Indiana and recovery in steel demand.
Weak steel consumption in the first nine months of the year caused sales to tumble 29 percent to 1.2 million metric tons. High-value products in the NLMK USA portfolio increased by 3 percent to 49 percent during the period.
NLMK Group steel output grew 3 percent year-over-year to 3.9 million tons during the third quarter. Exports increased by 42 percent to 1.8 million tons due to higher shipments of semis. Home market sales fell 2 percent to 2.8 million tons from a year ago due to lower demand for slabs used in large diameter pipes in the Russian market.
