Weekly Steel Production Jumps 3.6 Percent

Weekly raw steel production by U.S. mills totaled 1,709,000 net tons in the week ending Jan. 9, up 3.6 percent from the week before when the total was 1,650,000 net tons. The mill utilization rate was 75.4 percent, up from 74.6 percent the week prior; however, down by 10.3 percent compared to the same week in 2020 when the utilization rate was 82.4 percent.
Adjusted year-to-date production through Jan. 9 was 2,180,000 net tons, at an average utilization rate of 75.2 percent. That’s down 10.4 percent from the same period last year then the utilization rate was 82.4 percent and production was 2,432,000 net tons, AISI said.
Following is production by district for the Jan. 9 week: North East, 155,000 net tons; Great Lakes, 601,000 net tons; Midwest, 184,000 net tons; South, 699,000 net tons; and West, 70,000 net tons, for a total of 1,709,000. Production was down in the North East and Western regions; however, increases in the Great Lakes, Midwest and Southern regions carried the 3.6 percent increase week-on-week.
Note: The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated. The figures are compiled from weekly production tonnage from 50 percent of the domestic producers combined with monthly production data for the remainder. Therefore, this report should be used primarily to assess production trends. The AISI monthly production report provides a more detailed summary of steel production based on data supplied by companies representing 75 percent of U.S. production capacity. Capability for fourth-quarter 2020 is approximately 29.1 million tons, compared to 30.4 million tons for the same period last year and 29.4 million tons for the second quarter of 2020.
