Weekly Raw Steel Production Slips Again: AISI
Written by David Schollaert
September 6, 2022
Raw steel production by US mills fell for the second straight week and to the lowest total since February 2021. Domestic output was 1,715,000 net tons in the week ending Sept. 3, while capacity utilization was 77.8%.
Utilization rates haven’t eclipsed the 80% mark in nine weeks, according to the latest data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
US output was down 1.8% versus the week prior and down 7.7% versus the same period last year when production was 1,858,000 net tons. Mill capacity utilization last week was 1.5 percentage points below the prior week and 6.4 percentage points below the same period one year ago when utilization was 84.2%.
Adjusted year-to-date production through Sept. 3 totaled 61,318,000 net tons, at an average utilization rate of 79.9%. That’s 3.7% below the same period last year when production was 63,690,000 net tons, though the utilization rate was lower then, at 80.7%, AISI said.
Output fell in three of five regions last week. The Great Lakes saw the largest decline in tons, producing 21,000 net tons (-3.8%) fewer versus the week prior, followed by the Northeast (-13,000 net tons, or -7.9%), and the Midwest (-1,000 net tons, or -05%), week-on-week.
Production by region for the week ending Sept. 3 was as follows: Northeast, 151,000 tons; Great Lakes, 539,000 tons; Midwest, 201,000 tons; South, 759,000 tons; and West, 65,000 tons—for a total of 1,715,000 net tons, down 32,000 net tons from the prior week.
Note: The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated. The figures are compiled from weekly production tonnage provided by approximately 50% of the domestic production capacity combined with the most recent monthly production data for the remainder. Therefore, this report should be used primarily to assess production trends. The AISI production report “AIS 7,” published monthly and available by subscription, provides a more detailed summary of steel production based on data supplied by companies representing 75% of US production capacity.
