AHRI: Shipments Rise in June
Written by Becca Moczygemba
August 13, 2023
Domestic heating and cooling equipment shipments were up in June, according to newly released data from the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).
Total shipments in June were 2.02 million units, compared to 1.97 million in May. Shipments were up 3% month over month (MoM), driven primarily by a boost in shipments of warm air furnaces and central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps. Despite the gain, total shipments were still down 10% year over year (YoY).

On a 12-month moving average (12MMA) basis, however, shipments were moderately lower at 1.82 million units per month vs. 2.02 million units in June 2022.

As shown in the chart below, total heating and cooling shipments on a three-month moving average (3MMA) basis through June were down 10% compared with the same period last year. The 3MMA basis has declined every month in 2023, with April seeing the largest decline at 12%.

Residential and commercial storage water heater shipments decreased 4% MoM to a combined 781,797 units, but increased 11% YoY from 701,735 units.
June shipments of warm air furnaces totaled 263,938 units, a 6% increase compared to May.
Central air conditioners and air-source heat pump shipments were up 8% MoM but dropped by 14% YoY. A total of 598,766 air conditioner units and 379,895 heat pump units were shipped in June.
