UAW Set to Target Individual Plants at Detroit 3: Report
Written by Ethan Bernard
September 13, 2023
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is preparing a “strategic strike,” targeting specific plants at all three of the Detroit automakers, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.
The union can then “escalate actions” at additional plants as the negotiations continue, said the article, which was published on Tuesday and which cited anonymous sources.
The report said the plan was first detailed to union leaders late last week and Monday. It was then communicated to UAW Local leaders on Tuesday evening.
However, the situation could change depending on the outcome of ongoing the negotiations. Recall that the UAW’s contracts with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis expire on Thursday at 11:59 pm.
UAW President Shawn Fain will be on Facebook Live on Wednesday at 5 pm ET. His office said in an email to union members on Monday that he would provide the “very latest” on bargaining with the “Big Three.”
The Free Press article said he was expected to elaborate on the strike strategy then.
