AISI: US raw steel output inches up 1%

US steel production increased for the week ended Dec. 16, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute’s (AISI’s) report on Monday, Dec. 18.
Raw steel output totaled 1,714,000 net tons, up 1.0% from 1,697,000 tons a week earlier and up 8.8% from 1,576,000 tons in the same period last year.
The mill capability utilization for the week stood at 74.6% vs. 73.8% a week before and 70.6% a year ago.
Adjusted year-to-date production through Dec. 16 was 85,354,000 tons at a capability utilization rate of 75.4%. That is down marginally from the 85,377,000 tons produced during the same period in 2022 when the rate was 77.5%.
Production by region is shown below with the week-over-week change shown in parentheses:
- Northeast – 133,000 (up 3,000 tons)
- Great Lakes – 560,000 (up 5,000 tons)
- Midwest – 187,000 (down 3,000 tons)
- South – 764,000 (up 8,000 tons)
- West – 70,000 (up 4,000 tons)
