GSCC introduces label for new emissions target

The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) has taken a step forward in standardizing the decarbonization process by publishing its labeling for a certified science-based emissions target (SBET).

The target is in line with the Steel Climate Standard, which seeks a “science-based glide path” to achieve a 1.5-degree Celsius cooling scenario by 2050. It requires third-party verification of emissions data and “science-based targets.”
GSCC noted the label will be used to certify a steel producer’s ambition towards meeting the goal of net zero by 2050.
“As we begin to certify our members’ targets, the global community will recognize the GSCC SBET certification as real emissions reduction action behind the words,” Adina Renee Adler, executive director of GSCC, said in a statement on Friday.
GSCC is a non-profit organization involved in efforts to reduce carbon emissions from steel. It includes steel manufacturers, associations, and other organizations in the steel supply chain and has a presence in over 80 countries.
