Written by David Schollaert

US raw steel production ticked up in the week ending on Sept. 6 after a decrease the week before, according to the most recent data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Domestic mills produced 1,795,000 short tons (st) last week, up 1.5% from a week earlier. It also marks a 7.7% rise from the 1,667,000 st produced in the same week last year.

The capability utilization rate was 79.2% last week, up from 78.1% the previous week, but up from 79.2% a year earlier.

Adjusted year-to-date production (YTD) through Sept. 6 was 61,461,000 st at a capability utilization rate of 77%. That’s a 1.9% jump from 60,339,000 st at 76.4% during the same time last year.

Here are the raw production figures week over week (w/w) in the five regions defined by AISI:

  • Northeast – 122,000 st (down 5,000 st)
  • Great Lakes – 559,000 st (up 14,000 st)
  • Midwest – 240,000 st (up 3,000 st)
  • South – 802,000 st (up 15,000 st)
  • West – 72,000 st (down 1,000 st)

Editor’s note: The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated and should be used primarily to assess production trends. The graphic included in this report shows unadjusted weekly data. The monthly AISI “AIS 7” report is available by subscription and provides a more detailed summary of domestic steel production.
