SDI announces proprietary low-carbon EDGE products

    Written by Ethan Bernard

Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) has announced lower-embodied-carbon steel products BIOEDGE and EDGE, and expects “immediate interest” from several markets for some of the offerings.

The Fort Wayne, Ind.-based steelmaker said the products will support customers aiming to lower greenhouse gas emissions and pursue sustainability initiatives.

“We are excited to expand our lower-embodied-carbon steel product offerings, and we are committed to providing high-quality, innovative supply-chain solutions to support our customers’ decarbonization initiatives,” Chairman and CEO Mark D. Millett said in a statement on Monday.

The products are made exclusively with EAF technology. And the renewable biocarbon used to produce BIOEDGE will be sourced exclusively from SDI Biocarbon Solutions, a 75/25 joint venture with biocarbon producer Aymium.

EDGE products will be available across SDI’s steel operations, which include flat, long, and fabricated steels.

SDI said it “anticipates immediate interest from automotive and construction customers, and from across the renewable energy and infrastructure sectors.”

President and COO Barry Schneider told SMU, “This is the next step on our path towards our decarbonization goals.”

And he highlighted the programs the steelmaker is offering to customers.

“We have been offering several programs to customers that include renewable energy and lower Scope 2 emissions,” Schneider continued. “Our partnership with Canyon Wind provides Green-e Energy certified renewable energy certificates, and we have emission-free nuclear energy certificates.”
