AISI: Weekly raw steel production ticks down
Written by David Schollaert
Domestic steel production dipped last week, according to the latest figures from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Production has largely been trending higher since mid-October, but turned lower this past week.
US mills produced an estimated 1,745,000 short tons (st) of raw steel in the week ending Nov. 15, down 13,000 st (0.7%) from the previous week (Figure 1).

Last week’s production was still 1.1% above the year-to-date (YTD) weekly average of 1,727,000 st and 8.3% higher than the same week a year earlier. YTD production now stands at 78,973,000 st, 3.2% higher than the same period in 2024.
The mill capability utilization rate was 76.2% last week, down from 76.7% the week prior and above the 72.6% rate seen this time last year. Capability utilization has averaged 77.0% YTD.
Raw production increased week over week (w/w) in three of the five AISI-defined regions:
- Northeast – 125,000 st (up 5,000 st)
- Great Lakes – 527,000 st (down 15,000 st)
- Midwest – 263,000 st (up 5,000 st)
- South – 784,000 st (down 7,000 st)
- West – 46,000 st (down 1,000 st)
Editor’s note: The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated and should be used primarily to assess production trends. The graphic included in this report shows unadjusted weekly data. The monthly AISI “AIS 7” report is available by subscription and provides a more detailed summary of domestic steel production.
