AISI: Weekly raw steel production ticks back up
Written by David Schollaert
Domestic steel production improved last week, according to the latest figures from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Production has been irregular since the beginning of November, bobbing up and down over the past four weeks.
US mills produced an estimated 1,761,000 short tons (st) of raw steel in the week ending Nov. 22, up by 16,000 st (0.9%) from the previous week (see Figure 1).

Last week’s production was 2% above the year-to-date (YTD) weekly average of 1,727,000 st and 9.2% higher than the same week a year earlier. YTD production now stands at 80,734,000 st, 3.3% higher than the same period in 2024.
The mill capability utilization rate was 76.9% last week, up from 76.2% the week prior and above the 72.6% rate seen this time last year. Capability utilization has averaged 77.0% YTD.
Raw production decreased week over week (w/w) in three of the five AISI-defined regions:
- Northeast – 122,000 st (down 3,000 st)
- Great Lakes – 521,000 st (down 6,000 st)
- Midwest – 260,000 st (down 3,000 st)
- South – 804,000 st (up 20,000 st)
- West – 54,000 st (up 8,000 st)
Editor’s note
The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated and should be used primarily to assess production trends. The graphic included in this report shows unadjusted weekly data. The monthly AISI “AIS 7” report is available by subscription and provides a more detailed summary of domestic steel production.
