Nucor, Cliffs, Wheeling-Nippon adjust coating extras higher
Written by Brett Linton
Multiple steel mills revised their galvanized, galvannealed and/or aluminized coating extras higher this week.
SMU first heard on Monday, Dec. 1, that Nucor was increasing its galvanized and galvannealed extras, with new prices going into effect on Jan. 10, 2026.
A source relayed that Cleveland-Cliffs also adjusted its galvanized extras on Monday, effective with January orders.
Wheeling-Nippon followed suit on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The steelmaker revised its coating extra for aluminized and galvanized/galvanneal “effective beginning with any new orders for ready week ending Jan. 10, 2026 production and beyond.”
Zinc is used in galvanized and other coated steel products and is the primary driver of price changes in coating extras. As noted in our recent Raw Material Price update to Premium members, zinc prices have steadily risen over the past seven months, reaching a near-three-year high in late October, and aluminum prices have surged to historical highs.
SMU did a comparison of old and new Nucor extras in Table 1 (click to expand), showing an average increase of 14% across all thickness tiers. Nucor’s latest price extra books by mill can be found here on its website under the Sheet tab.

SMU maintains current copies of mill price books, available for reference on our website. We have price books available for ArcelorMittal Calvert, California Steel Industries, Cleveland-Cliffs, NLMK PA, Nucor, Steel Dynamics, U.S. Steel and Big River Steel, and Wheeling-Nippon.
