Nippon zeroes in on site for US steel plant: Report

    Written by Ethan Bernard

Nippon Steel said it hopes to pare down a list of sites by next summer and make a final decision by the end of 2026 for a new U.S. Steel plant in the United States, according to a report posted on Nippon.com on Dec. 2.

The Japanese steelmaker plans to build two EAFs at a cost of ~$4 billion, with a combined capacity of 3 million tons of crude steel, Takahiro Mori, vice chairman of Nippon, said in a recent interview, the article reported.

Essential criteria were said to include land, electricity, and railroad and road networks, as well as human resources and policies.

Other conditions to be analyzed include steel demand in nearby areas and the ease of obtaining materials, according to the article.

In a separate article on Dec. 1, Bloomberg said the shortlist will include two or three states and the final decision will come in early 2027.

A request for comment from both USS and Nippon was not returned by time of publication.
