SSAB names Cox as new head of Americas division
Written by Laura Miller
SSAB is tapping Tom Cox to lead its Americas division.
Cox will take the helm as head of SSAB Americas as of Feb. 1, 2026. He’ll assume the position from Chuck Schmitt, who announced his upcoming retirement last December.
Currently serving as general manager of SSAB Iowa, Cox has been with the company for 24 years.
“With over two decades at SSAB, Tom Cox has developed a unique expertise spanning the entire value chain—from steel production and metallurgy to ensuring top-quality delivery for our customers,” commented SSAB President and CEO Johnny Sjöström.
As GM of SSAB Iowa, Cox supervises safety, operations, maintenance, and engineering teams. He previously held roles in technical services, continuous improvement, and rolling, finishing, and shipping operations management.
Sjöström noted Cox’s “leadership has been instrumental in advancing fossil-free steel in the US and strengthening SSAB Americas’ market position.”
In September, the company announced its SSAB Zero steel produced at its Montpelier, Iowa, facility had become the world’s first near-zero CO2 steel to meet the thresholds set by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the First Movers Coalition (FMC). GE Vernova already plans to use SSAB Zero in its onshore wind towers.
