USS buys USS-UPI property in California for $275M: Report

    Written by Ethan Bernard

U.S. Steel has bought the Pittsburg, Calif., property where the former USS-POSCO venture was located for $275 million, according to a report in The Mercury News.

Recall that the USS-UPI mill had been a 50-50 joint venture between U.S. Steel and South Korean steelmaker POSCO. U.S. Steel took full control in 2020. It was idled in 2024.

The Mercury article cited documents filed on Dec. 29 with the Contra Costa County Recorder’s Office.

U.S. Steel Property Holdings, the real estate unit of USS, made the transaction, according to the report.

This comes under the backdrop of USS parent Nippon Steel’s pledge to invest $11 billion in U.S. Steel by the end of 2028.

There has been no information on what USS will do with the property or whether the mill will be restarted. A request for comment from the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker was not returned by time of publication.

USS-UPI was a steel supplier to the West Coast. It could produce 1.5 million tons annually of cold-rolled and galvanized steel sheet and tin mill products made from hot bands, principally supplied by U.S. Steel.
