Written by Kristen DiLandro
The state of Louisiana paid Germania Plantation Inc. $91 million to acquire 1,700 acres along the Mississippi River for Hyundai Steel’s proposed EAF operation.
Multiple regional sources report the tract will host Hyundai Steel’s $5.8-billion steel manufacturing facility.
Hyundai announced it was considering its first US-based sheet production facility in January 2025. The group formally confirmed its plans for the Louisiana-based EAF operation later in March.
Fellow South Korean firm POSCO agreed to join Hyundai on the project. Hyundai plans to supply steel from this outlet to its American automotive manufacturing plants.
The decision to invest in a US-based steel making facility won accolades from President Trump. He lauded the choice by the South Korean company to create American jobs.
