Global Steel Climate Council certifies first Asian steel company
Written by Ethan Bernard
The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) has certified its first Asian steel company.
On Monday, the GSCC announced the certification of Japan’s Yamato Kogyo Co. Ltd.’s Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science-Based Emissions Target (SBET).
The SBET is to reduce emissions for the company’s hot-rolled steel production by 2030 and 2050.
“The GSCC welcomes our first certification in Japan and Asia, Yamato Kogyo,” GSCC Executive Director Adina Renee Adler said in a statement.
“With this milestone, GSCC’s certified community continues to expand, building on a foundation where four certified members have already eliminated nearly 3 million metric tons of CO2 emissions through independently verified reductions,” she added.
Yamato Kogyo is a Japan-based steel manufacturer specializing in electric-arc furnace production.
Background
GSCC’s Steel Climate Standard is described as “a globally applicable, technology-neutral framework based on science-based targets and transparent reporting.”
The group is a non-profit organization with a mission to reduce steel emissions by creating science-based global standards.
SMU has previously reported on GSCC’s certification of various Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) products.
