USS solicits bids for new mini-mill location: Report
Written by Laura Miller
U.S. Steel has issued a bid solicitation for the site of its new $4-billion mini-mill, and Michigan is in the running, the company’s top executive recently told Crain’s Detroit Business.
USS President and CEO David Burritt said the call has gone out to “many states,” including Michigan.
“We’ve been there for a very long time, and we’re always looking for opportunities to update each of our facilities,” he told Crain’s on the sidelines of an event in Detroit. “And now with Nippon, we actually have more opportunity to invest.”
He was referencing U.S. Steel’s Great Lakes Works, situated along the Detroit River in Ecorse and River Rouge, Mich. Finishing operations continue at the mill, but U.S. Steel permanently idled three blast furnaces and a hot strip mill there in 2019 and 2020.
In its search for a site for the new mini-mill, the company has said it is considering land availability and access to electricity, rail and road networks, human resources, and legal policies.
“We need to make sure it’s a place where we can do business,” Burritt told Crain’s.
Previous reports have said the new mill will feature two electric-arc furnaces (EAFs) with a combined annual raw steelmaking capacity of 3 million tons. A decision is expected by the end of this year.
U.S. Steel did not respond to a request for comment on this story.
