    Written by Ethan Bernard

US raw steel production increased both week over week (w/w) and year over year in the week ended April 4, according to the latest data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Domestic mills produced 1,831,000 short tons (st) at a capability utilization rate of 79.1% last week. That’s up 1.6% from 1,803,000 st a week earlier when capability utilization was 77.9%. And it’s an 8.2% jump from 1,692,000 st in the week ending April 4, 2025, when capability utilization was 75.6%.

Through April 4, adjusted year-to-date production stood at 24,028,000 st, at an overall capability utilization rate of 77.4%. That is a 5.2% increase from 22,835,000 st during the same period in 2025. At that time, the capability utilization rate was 76.1%.

Raw production increased w/w in four of the five regions defined by AISI:

    • Northeast – 133,000 st (down 3,000 st w/w)
    • Great Lakes – 517,000 st (up 4,000 st)
    • Midwest – 286,000 st (up 16,000 st)
    • South – 826,000 st (up 8,000 st)
    • West – 69,000 st (up 3,000 st)

Editor’s note: The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated and should be used primarily to assess production trends. The graphic included in this report shows unadjusted weekly data. The monthly AISI “AIS 7” report is available by subscription and provides a more detailed summary of domestic steel production.
