Nucor to expand Vulcraft Indiana with $59M investment

Nucor Corp. plans to invest $59 million to expand its Vulcraft Indiana manufacturing operations in St. Joe, Ind. The investment will add capabilities to produce steel grating products.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based steel company expects the investment to create 20 new full-time jobs. Those are in addition to the over 300 workers currently employed there.
Explaining the rationale for the investment, John Hollatz, Nucor’s EVP of fabricated construction products, said, “We are pleased to be growing our Vulcraft business in Indiana with this investment to better serve our customers and strengthen our downstream production capabilities, advancing our mission to Grow the Core and Expand Beyond.”
He also highlighted Vulcraft’s historical significance to Nucor: “Vulcraft is where Nucor got its start in the steel industry, and it remains an important part of our growth today.” Nucor first entered the steel industry with its 1962 acquisition of Vulcraft.
Vulcraft now operates nine facilities across North America, producing steel joists, joist girders, and steel decking. Its products are primarily used in nonresidential construction. Vulcraft has an annual production capacity of ~1.2 million short tons.
The $59 million Vulcraft investment marks Nucor’s fourth major outlay in Indiana in recent years. It builds on a $290 million investment to modernize the steel sheet operations in Crawfordsville. And a $115 million investment to build a utility infrastructure production facility nearby. Nucor also invested $28.5 million to construct an insulated metal panel production facility in Waterloo.
