USW, Cliffs contract talks continue ahead of Sept. 1 deadline
Written by Ethan Bernard
The United Steelworkers (USW) union said on Friday that negotiations continue with Cleveland-Cliffs at both local and master bargaining tables.
“We have not started discussing wage increases yet because both sides are still working through several important issues that need to be resolved first, like benefits,” the union said in a statement on Friday.
Recall that USW labor contracts with both Cliffs and U.S. Steel expire on Sept. 1.
The USW highlighted that negotiations can sometimes seem slow, “especially when the issues are complicated. That is a normal part of the bargaining process.”
“Once some of the major issues are settled, things can move much faster, and a tentative agreement can come together quickly,” the union added.
A request for comment from Cleveland-Cliffs was not returned by time of publication.
