Hyundai holding ceremonial groundbreaking on Louisiana EAF mill: Report

    Written by Ethan Bernard

South Korea’s Hyundai Steel is holding a ceremonial groundbreaking on its electric-arc furnace (EAF) mill in Louisiana on Friday, according to local media reports.

A Hyundai spokesperson told the Louisiana Radio Network on Friday that the mill “allows us to not rely on geopolitics or foreign countries to determine what the supply chain is when it comes to vehicle manufacturing in the US.”

As previously reported, the $5.8-billion mill is a joint project with fellow South Korean steelmaker POSCO, which confirmed a 20% stake in the proposed EAF mill in December 2025.

The mill in Ascension Parish, La., will produce hot-rolled coil and cold-rolled coil. It will have annual capacity of nearly 3 million short tons (2.7 million metric tons). Operations are slated to begin in 2029.

Back in May, SMU reported that Hyundai and POSCO chose Italian mill equipment provider Danieli to build several installations at the proposed mill.
